Observation & Evaluation
Sunnyside believe that on-going formative assessment should always be at the heart of effective early years practice. Observing what children ‘can do’ helps to identify where the child may be in their own development and the next steps we need to take to progress them further. Each child has their own profile folder which captures their learning journey and their achievements, child profiles are available for parents to view. A Parent’s Consultation evening is held throughout the academic nursery year; December and June. Where parents and practitioners discuss each child’s development and plan together how to keep moving their child forward. However, parents are welcome to visit the nursery to discuss their child’s progress with our team.
Practitioners observe children as they act and interact during their free play and adult led planned activities. We record what children ‘say’ and ‘do’ assessing what they ‘need’ to learn and what their ‘interests’ are in. Key persons may also adopt many other approaches in response to children to ensure that we are challenging each child to develop to their full potential. Parent observations from home are also valued and welcomed which have captured the child’s skills and learning outside of the setting.
Planning: Next Steps & the Environment
Based on what they have observed each key person plans for children’s ‘next steps’, considering ways to support each child in order to strengthen and deepen their current learning and development. This is supported through adult led activities: focused learning in small groups, child-initiated learning: free play and planning the learning environment; tuning into children’s ‘needs’ and ‘interests’.
Trackers are used to plot where each child best fits according to what they attain; their skill, ability and successes. We then judge if they are working at the expected level based on their age. This enables practitioners to keep a close ‘eye’ on how well their key children are achieving, planning strategies to challenge and develop them on. So children are in a constant cycle of learning and developing.
